What is Dedicated Administrator Connection and When to use it?

With SQL Server 2005 or 2008, Microsoft offers a new feature, the dedicated administrator connection. This configuration is intended to serve as a last means of defense to troubleshoot and kill the offending SQL Server processes as opposed to rebooting the server possibly causing database corruption and/or access violations. The DAC allows you to connect to the server and issue T-SQL commands to troubleshoot and correct the problem.

  • DAC provides a running instance of SQL Server database to administrator.
  • DAC is Dedicated Administrative Connection that enables to access SQL server database in adverse situation, generally when SQL Server has stopped responding.

  • DAC login is required to troubleshoot the SQL Server malfunctioning state and end the faulty running process in SQL Server
  • No network connections are permitted rather DAC client account must be running from SQL Server
